For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJVFear does not come from God. However, fear is just as much a spiritual force as Faith. We know that “…faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”(Romans 10:17 NKJV)
Well, fear comes by hearing too and believing the lies of the devil, who is the author of lies!
So, how do we destroy fear in our lives? Praise God! Jesus has given us every tool and weapon we need as believers to destroy fear. Kenneth Copeland says it like this “You can’t walk in faith and fear at the same time” This is why it is so important as people of Faith to recognize when fear is trying to get a hold of us and destroy it. The Word states, “without faith it is impossible to please Him…” (Hebrews 11:6 NKJV) and we are required to walk by Faith, in order to experience victory in every of our lives.
The Holy Spirit who has been given to us is the Spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Let’s take a closer look at these facets of the Holy Spirit that destroy fear when we put the Word to work in our lives.
1.Power
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8 NKJV)
Jesus told his disciples that they would receive power from the Holy Spirit, which is exactly what happened on the day of Pentecost. Praise God! This is the same power that is available to us as Spirit- filled believers. This is the power that destroys fear and empowers us in all areas of our lives.
Furthermore, praying in the Holy Spirit is one of the ways that we activate the Spirit of Power. The Word states that this is a way to build ourselves up, which means that we become strong and position ourselves to oppose fear. But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit. (Jude 1:20 NLT)
That’s not all! We are also instructed on when and how to pray in the Holy Spirit. “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” (Ephesians 6:18 NLT) This is God’s will for us all – to be able to pray in the spirit and communicate in our heavenly language, activating the power of God.
2. Love
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.( 1 John 4:18 NKJV)
God Is Love, which means that the Christ in us (which is perfected love) casts out fear, because fear has torment. Fear is a tormentor – always threatening you with the worst possible outcome. It is directly opposed to the promises and Word of God.
I like how Kenneth describes the condition of tolerating fear in our lives, “Fear has no place in the life of any believer. The spirit of fear is the same as the spirit of death, so you cannot let it get a hold of you.” Amen! It is important to remember that we haver been delivered from fear. We do not have to strive or fight against fear in the hope that it will be destroyed. Jesus has already delivered us from fear – Hallelujah!
3. Sound Mind
For, “Who can know the LORD’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him?” But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16 NLT)
How do we have the mind of Christ? One of the promises we have from the Word is that we “overcome by the Blood of the lamb and the Word of our testimony”( Revelation 12:11 NKJV)
A sound mind is a mind that does not wander aimlessly but is fixed on God and His Word, as stated in Joshua 1:8 NKJV, “..you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” This is what we are called to do as believers.
So, how do you recognize if you are having a fear thought? Well, there is never any love, peace or joy in it! Love however will cast out fear- the more we know about the love of God and meditate in His Word, the stronger we are in resisting fear. When we speak God’s Word we are taking control of our thoughts and resisting fear.
In order to successfully destroy fear we have to speak to the situation that we are facing. It is impossible to fight thoughts with thoughts. Kenneth Copeland says it like this, “Fear tolerated is Faith contaminated” Start speaking the Word today to diminish any fear that is trying to manifest in your life. Begin to stand on the Word of God to destroy any fear that is trying to contaminate your Faith today. Thank God that we do not have to tolerate fear any longer, through the power of The Holy Spirit!
