4 Steps To Defeat Financial Fear

If you’ve ever had to choose between buying groceries or paying the electric bill, then you have probably experienced the fear of not having enough. You know the painful struggle of paying what you can and postponing what you can’t. You also know the internal battle of trying to do what’s right while wrestling with the reality of your circumstances.

4 Steps to Defeat Financial Fear

Shut down the voice of fear regarding lack and turn up the voice of God with these 4 Steps To Defeat Financial Fear.

Even though your current circumstances may indicate the contrary, God’s desire is that you prosper. Third John 2 says, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (NKJV). God is for you! In fact, He has provided answers in His Word to help you come out of financial lack and into a place of prosperity. Follow these 4 Steps To Defeat Financial Fear and experience peace in your mind, while the Lord works on your behalf to bring you the finances you need.

1. Choose God’s Plan for Your Finances

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!” –Deuteronomy 30:19

Just like in every other area of your life, God has a plan for your finances, and He wants you to choose life in your finances. It is never God’s will that you lack—not periodically nor chronically. When you obey His commands, the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you’ll always be on top and never at the bottom (Deuteronomy 28:11-14).

When you choose God’s plan for your finances, you are choosing to manage your money the way God says to in His Word. God says to tithe—to give Him the first 10% of your income and to trust Him to bless the other 90%—to stretch it further than you ever could without Him. God even says to prove Him in this matter of the tithe, meaning you can put Him to the test. Malachi 3:10 says, “‘Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,’ says the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, ‘I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!’” Start tithing to your local church, and watch God work on your behalf in your finances.

God’s plan for your finances also includes deciding how much and where you want to give. Second Corinthians 9:7 says, “You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’” After the tithe, you can choose to give offerings wherever you desire. These include giving money to good works, giving what you have that’s new or in excellent condition to others, giving your time and talent, giving a smile, or giving a word of encouragement. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). When you choose God’s plan for your finances, you are taking the first step to defeat fear over your finances.

2. Resist Financial Fear

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” –2 Timothy 1:7

Fearful thoughts do not come from God, so you can resist them. The devil likes to play the same thoughts on repeat in your mind, reminding you about what you don’t have and the finances that you need. When you resist the devil, he will flee from you (James 4:7).

It was Paul who wrote, “We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments” (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). Every time you have a thought that causes you to panic; your heart to race; your mind to start spinning with fear, anxiety and worry about how you’re going to buy groceries, put gas in your car or pay rent; stop. Take authority over those fear-driven thoughts and cast them down.

After you have resisted those fearful thoughts, you can declare the Word that combats those thoughts, and the next step shows you exactly how to do that.

3. Pay Attention to God’s Word About Your Finances

“My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” –Proverbs 4:20-23

God’s Word has much to say about your finances, including budgeting, saving and investing. The more attention you give God’s Word, the easier all these 4 Steps To Defeat Financial Fear will be—and the sooner you’ll walk in peace, regardless of your circumstances (Philippians 4:6-7).

Look up scriptures on your own and discover what the Bible says about finances.

Here are a few scriptures to get you started:

  • Generous people are blessed (Proverbs 11:24-25).
  • People should not be greedy for money (1 Peter 5:2).
  • God gives people the ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18).
  • It’s wise to estimate the cost before starting a project (Luke 14:28).
  • Diligent planning leads to profit (Proverbs 21:5).
  • Hard work leads to profit (Proverbs 14:23).
  • A wise person saves for the future (Proverbs 21:20).

The more you give God’s Word your attention, the more you will hear it and it will cause you to triumph (2 Corinthians 2:14). As you do, you will silence all the other voices speaking to you.

4. Speak God’s Word Over Your Finances

“The centurion answered and said, ‘Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, “Go,” and he goes; and to another, “Come,” and he comes; and to my servant, “Do this,” and he does it.”’ When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel!’” –Matthew 8:8-10, NKJV.

The centurion in Matthew 8 asked Jesus to just speak the word and his servant would be healed. You can speak the Word over your finances, because the Word works; it’s always working on your behalf as you’re speaking it in faith (1 Thessalonians 2:13). God’s Word says that God will meet all your needs according to His riches in glory (Philippians 4:19). It says that God has given you a life of abundance (John 10:10). God’s Word says that you will prosper in all you do (Psalm 1:3). It says God delights in prospering you (Psalm 35:27, AMPC)!

Don’t rehearse the problem by saying how bad it is; speak the solution. Speak that your bills are paid—and not just paid on time, but early. Speak that you have a good job with a good salary and are able to meet the needs of your family. Speak that you have wisdom to know how to budget, how to invest, and how to sow into the lives of others.
